Pepper prices increased sharply in I-2021

In the first quarter of 2021, the average export price of pepper reached $2,879/ton, an increase of 31.5% over the same period in 2020. Part of the reason is that businesses reduce exports of raw pepper, instead of other countries. varieties have been more intensively processed.

According to estimates from the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), Vietnam’s pepper export turnover in March 2021 reached 30,000 tons, worth $86 million, up 123.4% in volume and up 120. 9% in value compared to February 2021, compared with March 2020, a decrease of 24.8% in volume but an increase of 4.3% in value.

In general, in the first quarter of 2021, Vietnam’s pepper exports are estimated at 60,000 tons, worth $174 million, down 25% in volume and 1.4% in value over the same period in 2020.

The average export price of pepper in March 2021 was estimated at $2,867/ton, down 1.1% compared to February 2021 but increased sharply by 38.6% compared to March 2020. In the first quarter of 2021, the average export price of pepper reached $2,879/ton, up 31.5% over the same period in 2020.

Statistics show that in the first 2 months of 2021, exports of black pepper and white pepper decreased compared to the same period in 2020 but exports of ground black pepper and ground white pepper increased sharply. Thus, the structure of export pepper categories has changed drastically. Enterprises reduce exports of raw pepper, instead of more intensively processed varieties.

Regarding pepper exports to Japan, the Import-Export Department said that according to statistics from the International Trade Center, Japan’s pepper imports in the first two months of 2021 reached 1.47 thousand tons, worth over $7 million, down 1% in volume but up 6.6% in value over the same period in 2020.

In the first two months of 2021, Japan reduced pepper imports from Malaysia and Indonesia but increased imports from Vietnam and India. This is considered a good sign for Vietnam’s pepper exports in the context that exports to European and US markets face difficulties when the epidemic is complicated.

Statistics show that Japan’s pepper imports from Vietnam in the first two months of 2021 reached 414 tons, worth approximately 2 million USD, up 44.3% in volume and 51.2% in value. price compared to the same period of 2020. Vietnam’s pepper market share in Japan’s total imports increased sharply from 19.29% in the first 2 months of 2020, to 28.12% in the first 2 months of 2021.
